Diseases That Live in Carpets
I bet you are not surprised when I tell you that regular annual or bi-annual carpet cleaning can reduce disease and mold in your carpets. I don’t know if I’m believed when I say it though because I’m a carpet cleaner. Of course, I’m going to say cleaning carpets is a good thing.

As I write this America is being quanantined from the Coronavirus (COVID-19), but Coronavirus isn’t the only virus that is very dangerous. The truth about the Coronavirus is that is lives less than 30 minutes on carpets.

Here are some other diseases that live longer in carpets.

 Norovirus (Norwalk Virus)

This virus can live on your carpets for 4-6 weeks and while you walk on your carpets you can inadvertantly make this virus airborne and then get it just simply by breathing. There are 685 million cases of acute gastroenteritis and Norovirus is the most common cause. It causes approximately 50,000 children dealth per year according to the CDC.

This is another one that is very dangerous. It can also live 4-6 weeks on carpets. There is 1,500,000 infections of Campylobacter every year in the US. There was a prolonged outbreak of this associated with puppies that were up for sale in pet stores. This is an antibiotic resistant so although you will more than likely recover on your own.  If you don’t however, you will be subject to an extensive regiment of antibiotics and usually a 5 day stay in the hospital.

Kawasaki Syndrome

This syndrome named after the Japanese doctor whom figured it out is caused exclusively by a genetic predisposition to it and dirty carpets. Chemical toxins and bacteria in carpets mix then enter the lungs to cause this condition. This syndrome is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in the US and it primarily affects children under 5 years old.

Methicillin-resistant Staphloccus aureus (MRSA)

MRSA can live in carpets for up to 7 months. It can also be present in healthy hosts for years without any symptoms.  It gets into the body with a scrape or open wound and it is estimated that 1/3 of the population carry this around in their noses. That said 27% of people that get an active MRSA infection are hospitalized and do not recover. Here is some more information from the CDC.

What can you do?

That is always the question. General cleanliness is the start. You should vacuum as frequently as needed at least weekly though and  a bi-annual/annual carpet cleaning (based on foot traffic) can reduce illness. These steps will clean carpets reducing dirt and bacteria in general, but it will also decrease the transmission of these sometimes deadly diseases.
