Professional Carpet Cleaning: How Often Should Carpet be Cleaned?
Author: Shannon Sullivan
Originally Published: Jan 23rd, 2007
When was the last time you had your carpets professionally cleaned? If you’re like the average American household, it was probably some time in the last year – and you will probably wait at least another year to get them cleaned again. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends carpets in residential homes are cleaned every 6-12 months if 2 or fewer people live in the home who is non smokers. For larger families with both kids and pets, the EPA recommends a professional carpet cleaning every 3 months [U.S. EPA letter, January 1989].
Recommendations like this are based on the indoor air quality in homes. Dust, dander and a multitude of soils collect on carpet, which acts as filter as air circulates through vent systems in a home. For persons with allergies, asthma, and even pregnant women and the elderly, having clean carpets can make a big difference in their quality of life indoors.
Having your carpet cleaned every 3 months can be very expensive. A market check of professional carpet cleaning prices showed that among both national brand names and smaller local carpet cleaning companies, the average cost for a 3 room, two hallway carpets cleaning at about $125 after coupons and specials were applied. If a homeowner has a carpet cleaner visit 3 times a year, the total cost of carpet cleanings can really add up.
Some families are choosing the do-it-yourself route to cleaning their carpets. Depending on where you live, grocery stores are offering cleaning machines and a multitude of carpet cleaning solutions for purchase. This may be another good way to keep your carpets cleaned. The drawback is that homeowners must do all then tough work themselves – lugging the machine to their cars and moving their own furniture. There are also some inherent risks with do-it-yourself methods that include:
- Over saturation of the carpet. If too much water or solution is applied, the glue that holds carpet fibers together can separate and ruin carpet
- Misapplication of cleaners. The incorrect cleaning solution applied to certain stains can permanently bleach or discolor carpet.
One thing is clear, indoor air quality is affected by the frequency with which your home’s carpets are cleaned, so professional carpet cleaning companies are finding unique ways of providing less expensive cleanings. Some offer new and improved package pricing to their customers. Customers who combine carpet cleaning with other services like Oriental rug cleaning can sometimes save upwards of 60% off their total bill. This allows homeowners to save some money and gets both carpet cleaning and rug cleaning taken care of in one visit. Other carpet cleaning companies are selling professional-grade carpet cleaning sprays and solvents, so that customers wanting to take care of their carpets themselves can do so without some of the risks associated with over-the-counter products. Another unique approach by professional carpet cleaning companies is to offer a stain removal only service. Here, customers pay only for the stain removal and not an entire carpet cleaning. Kiwi Carpet Cleaning offers this with a One Year Carpet Cleaning Warranty, where entire rooms are cleaned at a low price throughout the year. While you might have to move furniture yourself and vacuum before the carpet cleaning technician arrives, the low price may offset any minor hassles.
With all the dust, dander, dirt and soot collecting on the surfaces in your home, it is important to remind yourself that what you collect on a dust towel is just a small fraction of what ends up in your carpet. Take inventory of how often your carpets are walked on in your home and make carpet cleaning decisions that help you and your family breathe easier this year.

Tech stuff

Pure water technology. At Cliffords we spare no expense, our rinse water is reverse osmosed AND deionized.
Clifford the Carpet Cleaner service Vs. Other carpet cleaner service
Our Cleaning Method
Feedback from customers has helped us to evolve our cleaning method over the years. Consumers have asked, “Why do my spots come back?”, “Why does my carpet feel funny?”, and “Are your chemicals safe for my kids and pets who play on the carpet?”
First, ask yourself this question: Would you use soap to rinse your dishes, clothes, or hair? Of course not, but 90% of carpet cleaners rinse your carpet with soap that leaves behind a soapy residue. Soap causes the spots to come back, the carpet to feel funny(and soil rapidly), and skin irritation in kids and pets. Soap is used by many carpet cleaners because their water rinse is not hot enough to breakdown and remove the soil in the carpet.
At Clifford the Carpet Cleaner we use an organic prespray that loosens the soil. We then treat your carpet to a *pure water rinse extraction that removes the soil and detergent, leaving your carpet softer and cleaner. The secrets to our cleaning prowess are the use of extremely high heat, specially treated water, and greener chemicals.
Environmental Concerns
We believe businesses should be responsible stewards of the environment, therefore at Clifford the Carpet Cleaner we spare no expense in purchasing chemicals that are earth friendly and effective at removing stubborn stains.
* Pure water rinse extraction is performed with Deionized water. The purest water available. Cliffords uses rinse water temperature between 230-280 degrees.

Lesson learned
I hired a carpet cleaner over the phone because of an advertised special. When they came out to clean the carpet they tried to give me the bait and switch. Fortunately my son intervened and they got in their truck and drove away.
I found Clifford the Carpet Cleaner in the yellow pages and when I called Elizabeth she gave me a price quote guarantee and explained their service. Clifford is honest and reliable and does a fantastic job. Highly recommended.

General Carpet Cleaning
Author: Vernon Purcell
1st Posted: Dec 10th, 2008
As a carpet owner, it is important that you maintain a regular regime of general carpet cleaning. With regular cleaning, you ensure longevity of the carpet. Vacuuming the carpet a minimum of once a week is most important in carpet cleaning to minimize the amount of dust and dirt in the room.
A clean carpet not only is good to the eye, but it also controls the breeding of germs and bacteria and makes your home a much healthier place. However though many people own carpets, not everyone knows the right tips for general carpet cleaning.
Choose the right carpet cleaning materials
The first thing to consider for general carpet cleaning is the type of carpet you own as different types of cleaning require different carpet cleaning methods. With the right information about care for different types of carpets, your carpet lasts longer.
The cleaning materials you use for carpet cleaning is another important thing to consider in general carpet cleaning. This is because you not only have to wet the carpet, but it is also necessary to gently remove any dirt that is embedded in the carpet.
Hot water cleaning is an efficient means of cleaning your carpet; but not for woollen carpets. Heat is used to suspend the dirt particles that get stuck in the carpet, after which a cleaning agent is injected to remove the particles. After this, use heat and fans to dry the carpet clean
.
Dry cleaning for woollen carpets
If you are using carpet cleaning services for cleaning your carpet, make sure that you first check out with them if this step is included in their carpet cleaning costs to avoid complications after the carpet gets cleaned.
If you have a wool carpet, or you don’t actually like wet cleaning, you could consider dry cleaning of your carpet. In this method of carpet cleaning, chemicals are used for cleaning, and not water. Once the foam of the chemicals dry up and the powder settles done, you have to use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and detergent particles.
Hire a carpet cleaning service
Though you can clean your carpet on your own, it can be a rather tedious process. Instead, it is better to hire an efficient carpet cleaning service
for the general cleaning purposes of your carpet. There are quite a few cleaning services to choose from, like Supreme Carpet Care.
If you choose to use the help of carpet cleaning services, it is important that you clearly state your specifications, the care that your carpet needs and find out what the costs of the cleaning is. Moreover, find out how the carpet cleaner intends to clean your carpet, to ensure that you have no problems with their presence in your home or office.
And last, but not least, you could always give instructions to the carpet cleaning service to clean your carpet periodically; like once a month or once a fortnight, based on the amount of dirt and wear and tear the carpet goes through.
